Congratulations to our ladies' 1 team for becoming league champions yesterday. The final game of the season had them facing Athlone in a decisive match with the winner claiming the league. Athlone had recently defeated them in the cup final, so another close contest was expected.
Unfortunately, before the match, there were some late withdrawals due to illness, leaving the team short on players with only one substitute. This didn't deter them, and they started strong, with the in-form Veronica Curtain scoring two goals in the first half—one an impressive solo effort and the other a well-executed shot from a short corner.
Unfortunately, it wasn't all smooth sailing for Renmore, as they faced two injuries in the first half, forcing them to play with 10 players for nearly 40 minutes. Athlone capitalized on this advantage and dominated the remainder of the half, ultimately narrowing the score to 2-1 by halftime.
With players getting tired and no substitutes available, Renmore remained compact in the second half, aiming to frustrate their opponents. In a desperate move, Athlone removed their goalkeeper and played with 11 outfield players to seek the equalizing goal. Late in the fourth quarter, this risky strategy succeeded, and Athlone scored to level the match. However, Renmore shifted gears and, despite having only 9 outfield players against Athlone's 11, managed to drive the ball into the circle and secure another short corner in the game's final moments. Renmore needed calmness, and Veronica Curtain was the perfect person to demonstrate her skill and composure, delivering a brilliant finish to win the match 3-2.
The game was outstanding, with the entire team displaying incredible heart and determination to achieve the result. Congratulations to everyone involved.
